Uploading your eBook to the Digital River
Network
To upload your eBook to the Digital River
Network, you need to do 4 things:
1.
Sign Up with Digital River
2. Package
your eBook with DNL DRM powered by Digital River.
Important Note: The Payment gateway and unlock facility in this DNL DRM
protected eBook will not work until the eBook is activated by Digital
Rivers Reg Now (See step 3, 4 and 5 below). Please do not distribute your eBook until the eBook has been
activated by Digital River's RegNow, as the eBook security and payment
gateway provided with the DNL DRM will not work.
3.
Create the product on the Digital River (RegNow) system. Part of this
process involves uploading the DNL DRM file that you packaged in Step 2 to the
RegNow system in your account.
4
Download the tagged DNL file from the Digital River server. This is the
same as the file that you uploaded in Step 3, but it is tagged with Product
Information. The DRM system will not work without this information. You can
now distribute DNL DRM secured eBook which holds the payment gateway
and eBook security. THIS IS THE FILE THAT YOU
SHOULD DISTRIBUTE.
Important Note:Test
the DRM before uploading it to any websites. eBooks with non-functional
DRM will not be approved if they are uploaded to sharewareebooks.com or Project
eBook.
Sign Up with Digital
River
Step
1.
Open your browser at this location:
http://www.digitalriver.com/DR_DNAML_ebook.html
Step
2.
You will be taken to a page like
this:

Click the “SIGN UP TODAY” button,
and you will be taken to the signup page:
Step
3.
Enter the sign up information to
complete the sign up process. Digital
River requires you to enter your credit card information as part of their
verification process, but the account registration fee will be credited back to
you once your information has been verified.

Step
4.
An email will be to your “Automated
Email” address with a username and password once your account has been
approved.
Package your eBook with
Digital River DRM
Step 1.
Once your eBook is finished, click
“Properties” in the Toolbar inside DesktopAuthor, and click the “Settings”
button next to “Book DRM:”. This window
will appear:

Ensure that the DRM Type is set to “Digital River”. The software will automatically generate the
Project ID and Encryption Template. You
may want to keep a copy of these for future reference. Remember to set the number of free pages to
a value that suits your book. It is a
good idea to put a box on your last free page that explains the DRM feature to
your readers.
Step 2.
Package using Package DRM DNL.
Make sure you are using Digital River DRM by clicking on the arrow next
to the package icon, then select “DigitalRiver”:

Step 3.
Go to the folder containing your DML
file, and copy the file you packaged (DRM DNL) to a convenient location such as
your Desktop. This is the file you must upload to RegNow. Do not upload the .dml or .drm files.
You cannot distribute this DNL file, as
RegNow server must tag it. If you try
to access the locked portion of this DNL, nothing will happen. Once the DNL file is tagged, an attempt to
access the locked portion will cause the RegNow shopping cart window to appear.
Step 4.
You may wish to create a Preview Image
for your eBook. The Digital River
system allows you to upload a range of Preview Images and screen snapshots.
You will need a Boxshot image (eg a
picture of a book or your front cover) resized to 200 x 200 pixels.
If you are using RegNow’s oneNetwork
Affiliate network, you will also need these images:
·
Screenshot 200 x 200
·
Banner Creative 125x125
·
Banner Creative 468x60
·
Banner Creative 120x90.
Create the Product on the
Digital River System
Step 1.
Once your Digital River account has been
approved, you will receive an email containing a user name, password and a
login link. When you click the login
link, you will be prompted with a login window:

Enter your User name (4-digit number) and
Password and click “OK”.
Step 2.
A window like this will be
displayed. To the left is a Toolbar,
and to the main part of the page will contain account information, and
information about RegNow (eg graphics).
This will change from time to time.

Click “Products” in the Toolbar.
Step 3.
The
following will be displayed:

The
items listed will reflect the products that you have already created. If a product is Active, you can click [edit]
to edit the product. To create a new
product, click “Add Product to Your RegNow Account”.
Step 4.
You will see a screen like this:

·
Don’t worry about the PAD file. Ignore this
·
Enter the name of your product next to
Product Name (eg “My eBook”)
·
Select “Software:eBooks:DNAML” under
Category
·
If you wish to distribute the eBook
through Digital River’s network of resellers, keep the “Add product to the
oneNetwork affiliate program” box ticked.
If you want to keep the eBook “private”, and not visible to resellers,
uncheck this checkbox.
·
Leave everything else alone and Click
“Next >”
If you
miss something out, you will return to the same screen, and will be prompted
about the changes that are required.
Step 5.
You should now see a screen like this:

·
Enter the price of your eBook in US
dollars. All other supported currencies
will be calculated relative to the US dollar value
·
Next to all the images with a red
asterisk (*), you will need to select an
image. To do this, click the “use new
image” link, and upload or select an image (see Image Upload Instructions
below). At the moment, Boxshot –
200x200 is mandatory for all products, and if you are using oneNetwork, you
must all upload images for Screenshot 200 x 200, Banner Creative 125x125,
Banner Creative 468x60, and Banner Creative 120x90.
·
Select your target platforms: tick ALL
the boxes next to “Choose Platforms”
·
Enter Short, Medium and Long
Descriptions and Keywords
·
If you are using oneNetwork, enter
promotional text (eg “New eBook!”)
·
The Digital Locker sales channel is
currently NOT supported, so leave everything under “Retail Sales Channel
Information” blank.
·
At the bottom of the page, click “Next
>”
If you
miss something out, you will return to the same screen, and will be prompted
about the changes that are required.
Image Upload Instructions
·
Prepare images for each of the banners
and screenshots you require. At the
moment Digital River does not check image sizes, so they don’t need to match
the sizes specified (as one image can work for all). If you wish to promote the eBook through the Digital River
network, good images will help sell, so it will be worth creating good banners
·
Click “use new image” to upload an
image. A window like this will appear:

·
Click “Browse…” to select an image
from your computer, then “Upload” to upload the image
·
After a while, the screen will update,
and the image will appear in the “Available Images” box
·
Click the image and click “Save”. Wait patiently, and the page behind this
window will update. Then click “Exit”.
·
If the image name does not change, try
again.
·
Repeat the process for all
images. If you want to re-use an
existing image, just select the image rather than uploading a new image
Step 6.
You should now see a screen like this:

Change
nothing on this page, and click “Next >” to continue.
Step 7.
You should now see a screen like this:

Enter your delivery options:

Step 8.
You should now see a screen like this:

·
Enter a display name for your
eBook. This will be something like “My
eBook Ed 1”
·
Give it a version number
·
Click “Browse…” to locate the DRM DNL
on your computer, then click upload.
PLEASE NOTE:
1.
You must upload
a DNL file, not a “.DRM” or “.DML file”.
You use “Package DRM DNL” to create the DNL file, then upload the DNL
file which was created.
2.
The DRM EXE
format is currently not supported by Digital River, even though you can package
these files in DesktopAuthor.
·
Please wait patiently. Even if you have a broadband connection,
this upload will be very slow (typical broadband connections are great for
download, but slow for upload). A 2MB
DNL file will take several minutes to upload.
If you have a very large DNL file (eg 20MB or more), and are having
upload problem, please contact RegNow support .
·
If you are over-writing an existing
file, you must change the filename before uploading it (eg change ebook.dnl to
ebook2.dnl). You must also specify a
new Display Name and Version.
·
When the file is uploaded, the page
will update, and next to File: you new file will appear instead of “Create New
File”. Click “Save & Release”
Step 9.
Click “Products” in the Toolbar. You will be presented with a list of your products:

If you
have done everything correctly, your product will be listed as “Active”,
meaning that it is now working.
If it
has any other status, click “edit”.
This will take you back to Step 4.
Fix any problems and try releasing the product again.
When
the product is active, you can download the “tagged” DNL file from RegNow and
distribute it. You cannot distribute
the DNL file until RegNow tags it.
Distributing Your DRM DNL
file
Be sure that you only distribute DNL
files that have been tagged by the Digital River server – when you get to the
DRM section, the Digital River window will appear. Untagged DNL files do not work – when you get to the DRM section,
nothing will happen.
The
Digital River server tags the DNL DRM file when you download it using the
Download Manager. The download link for
your product is:
http://drh.digitalriver.com/activationserver/servlet/DownloadServlet?productID=XXXX-XX&platformID=regnow
Where the Product ID for your product replaces
XXXX-XX. Click “Products” on the
Toolbar to see the Product ID listed next to the name of your product.
For example, if your
Product ID is 1234-1, your download link will be:
http://drh.digitalriver.com/activationserver/servlet/DownloadServlet?productID=1234-1&platformID=regnow
You should these this
link by entering it into your browser address bar.
You will be prompted
with to open or save a file. This is a
Digital River download manager tool, which is a small download of about
120k. When you run this program, it
allows you to specify where the file should be saved, then you click “Download”
to download the file. When the file is
downloaded, the book will automatically open.
Right click on the
eBook, and select “Save As” from the menu to save the tagged eBook. Save it to your desktop. This is the file that you should distribute.
Do not distribute the DNL DRM file that was created in the “Package your eBook
with Digital River DRM“ section.
Please note: DRM EXE
files are currently not supported by Digital River. Only use DNL DRM at this stage.
Affiliates
You
can sell your products through Digital River Affiliates. You can specify what
commission the Affiliates will receive.
Each Affiliate must get your approval before they can sell your product.
Once
they have your approval, they will get their own Download Manager link. The DRM DNL and DRM EXE files that they
download will be unique for each Affiliate, and all purchases through those
files will credit the Affiliate with the commission that you specify.
Testing Your DRM DNL file
You
should not distribute your DRM file until you have tested it. Sharewareebooks.com and Project eBook will
not approve eBooks with non-functional DRM.
To
test a DRM DNL file, follow these steps:
1.
Create a backup copy of the DRM file.
Only work with the backup copy, not the original. If you don’t want to unlock the book on this
computer, do steps 2-6 on another computer.
2.
Open the eBook and go to the DRM (locked) section. If the DRM is working, the Digital River
window will appear. If nothing happens,
it means that your DNL file has not been tagged by Digital River.
3.
Check that the title, price and descriptions match those that you
entered when you configured the product on RegNow
4.
Do a trial purchase of the eBook.
Enter all your details including a correct email address. Use your RegNow password as the Credit card
name. Use “4200000000000000” as the
Credit Card number. Make sure you have
a valid expiry date.
5.
Continue through the purchase until you get to the receipt page. Click the red “Click here to Activate”
link. The Digital River system will
activate the book. Make sure that all
pages of the book are now accessible.
6.
Close the eBook and re-open it.
It will remain unlocked.
If you
want to re-lock the book, please contact DNAML or Digital River support.
